I am rebuilding an Allis Chalmers Model G engine. How can I tell by looking whether or not the camshaft needs to be reground? Thanks, AWB

use a micrometer and measure the diameter of each lobe in the "big" and "small" directions. all 4 intakes should be the same, and all 4 exhaust should be the same. you can subtract the small from the big and get the valve lift. if any numbers are different by .002 the cam is worn. if the numbers are all with in .005 and you dont feel any breaks or sharp edges, i would reuse.

If it feels rough when passing your fingernail across it, it needs work.
