Ok...finally got the diesel engine out of the D17 Series IV. (kinda wingin' it....the service manual is on order)
What is the best way to remove the pan? Should the rear mounting plate be removed b/4 attempting to take the pan off, or will the pan drop straight down from between the front & rear plates? I plan to leave the front mounting plate alone; there are bolts that come through the front of it and into the pan. Also, how is the rear mounting plate accurately aligned with the engine block? There's a large seal for the flywheel, so it must be important. I dont want to remove that plate until I find that out. Any help is greatly appreciated. Gatz

I just put the pan on my D-19 diesel, the bolts threw the front cover do have to come off, you do not get this partial gasket with the oil pan set. The pan comes straight down, no alignment studs, I used black RTV silicone on rear and the corners, I didn't find anything better. The rear doesn't get a new gasket. Good Luck, Jeff
