Same thing happened to my WD. Finally concluded that the plastic parts on the magneto were carbon tracking all over the place. Had to either replace all the plastic components or switch to a distributor with good cap and rotor. I switched to a distributor. As with yours, this happened one day when I tried to start it. It didn't run again until the distributor was in place.

Thanks to all. I did not mention in the original post that I converted over to a 12v system two years ago. It has a Distributor, rotor etc. So....I think that I will replace the cap, rotor, condensor and points this weekend. Hope this works. I'll let you know.

IF AND I REPEAT IF IT IS MOISTURE THERE IS A PRODUCT CALLED WIRE DRY--NOT SURE OF MANUF. BUT IT IS THE BEST INVENTION SINCE TOILET PAPER. NO NEED TO DISASEMBLE CAP OR ANYTHING JUST SPRAY AND START. EVEN AFTER HOT WATER PRESSURE WASHER ON A PRE-PAINT JOB. JUST SPRAY DIST CAP USUALLY DOES THE TRICK.

Identifying Tractor Smells - by Curtis Von Fange. We are continuing our series on learning to talk the language of our tractor. Since we can’t actually talk to our tractors, though some of the older sect of farmers might disagree, we use our five physical senses to observe and construe what our iron age friends are trying to tell us. We have already talked about some of the colors the unit might leave as clues to its well-being. Now we are going to use our noses to diagnose particular smells. ELECTRICAL SMELLS
