Block heater for D-19

I currently have an oil pan heater installed on my gas D-19 but would like to add an block heater. There are two types, one is a heating element that is screwed into the block and heats the coolant while the other is an external heater that is tapped into the block and goes to the water pump (I think). Which one is better and how would one hook one of these up?

My D-19 and D-17 both have block heaters that pipe into the block. The petcock has to be taken out and an adapter made to fit what ever size hose is on your heater. The upper hose goes to the thermostat housing on the engine side. When it's cold (like now +10) I like to plug them in for a few hours and they start right up. My one D-17 came from northern Wisconsin (where it really gets cold) and also has a heater in the lower radiator hose. Hope this helps, Jeff

i have a tank type heater on my 17d it goes in the drain and up to the water neck from lower rad hose to block [ it is an early mod.] my heater is 1500 watt if the tractor is in the garage out of the wind overnight the temp will be up to about 170 deg. hope this helps. david l wilson
