this question is for the painters out there, four years ago i painted my 58 d17 using martin-seinior red oxide laquer primer and vansickle equip. enamel. i have used this tractor putting up hay mowing etc. and hauled it to several show around the country. in mid dec. i parked it in my yard to use as a christmas display and last sun. went to put it away and found the paint had several cracks and chunks as long as 10-12" had just fallen off. the hood had not been hit or dented at all, the metal under the paint was bright and not rusted at all ,the final sanding was done with 220 paper so it should have stuck and i always wipe everything down with laquer thinner just before painting. any ideas. thanks for the help. david l wilson

As I understand it you can not use a laquer primer and an enamal paint! Because they are not compatable it probably loosened the paint. I always use enamel primer with enamel paint

You need to use a good base coat under the primer-surfacer. This all gets expensive, but it gets the job done the first time. On bare metal you need to use etch primer first, really bites in and helps prevent rust. Another way is to use epoxy primer, PPG makes on #DP40, it is self etching and I use it at work in frame rails and rocker panels to prevent rust. The old zink oxide and enamel primers worked good too, but they are hard to sand to get a nice finish. I agree to use the same brands but it isn't allways practicle. Good luck, Jeff

Dave, My bodyman said again without looking at it he's not sure what happened. He's only speculating a couple possibilities, but he said he has seen in some paint separation cases where the primer came off also because of the reaction between the two products. He did say the same thing Jeff said about using a good etching primer for the exposed metal. It's not cheap, but well worth the dough. When I painted my B, I used all Dupont products, including the primer as per his direction. Good luck! I hope you get her straighten out.... Steve

Dave,

I ran that one past my bodyman. He said it could have been a couple things. First, the primer might have not been good and didn't etch to the medal. Second, it's important to make sure what paint brands are compatable with one another. Sometimes they react immediately when painted, or in your case later on down the road they "separate" hence the sheets of paint coming off. He said, without looking at it, he leans towards paint separation due to incompatable mix. He always preaches to me "if yer' gonna paint, make sure you use the same company's primer with their product. It eliminates a lot of aggravation." I'm not a painter, although I did paint my B with the help from him and his spray booth. (My first real paint job.) Hope this helps a little..... Steve

Which one, the primer guy or the enamel guy? All they will do is blame the other guy. This is a classic example of mixing paint manufacturers!
