It would be a '53 WD..should have a large rectangular steel plate on the right hand side of the motor. I don't believe you will find a "tall" head on a WD

The "tall" head was introduced in '50 or '51 with ENGINE Ser.#289001. I have a '50 with the "short" head and a '51 (my Dad's) with the "tall" head.

I too would like to know where to find the info. on when the tall heads came out. I was always under the impression that they came out on the WD-45 with the power crator engine. However I am not really sure how to tell the tall head from the short head. Thanks for any info--Jack

The short head was proir to engine no. 253,490. At least that is what a Deutz Allis parts book I have says.

I have both the service manual and the Dealer Parts Book for WDs & WD-45s. There is a wealth of info in both. The Parts Book pinpoints the improvements or changes by the engine or tractor Ser. number at which the changes were made. There were updates and improvements made throughout the life of both the WD & WD-45. The WD "evolved" into the WD-45. This is evidenced by the continuation of the WD prefix in the serial numbers of both tractors. The most notable change was the introduction of the larger 226 C.I.D. engine in the "45" which improved the performance to the extent that it seemed like a totally new machine.

Chuckster, Could you post both the "tractor" and "engine" serial numbers off your tractor? This would help me determine in which year ('50 or'51) the "tall" head was actually introduced. Thanks, Brian G. BTW, I would guess your "engine" ser. # is before 289001?
