Diode in alternator feed line

I have installed a few alternators on tractors using a line fron the ign key to excite the fields. In order to prevent run-on after shutting off the key due to backfeed fron the alt.., need to put a diode in the line. Have used an old diode trio from junk alt, but would like to get a simple diode - anyone have a number from Radio Shack , or ? for a suitable item?

Use any 1N4001, 1N4002, 1N4003, or 1N4004 diode. Radio Shack may not have this exact part number, but they should have a cross reference. Install the diode with the banded end toward the alternator. While not a necessity, I would install a 27 to 47 ohm (value isn't that important), 2 watt resistor in series with the diode. This acts as a current limiter if you develop a short in the wiring or alternator.

I offer a Alternator Diode connector plug for the SI series Delco Alternators. Runs $12. for the plug-in connector. Plug it in the Alternator, and plug it into your circuitry. Drop us a line if interested..... Steve B./Custom Circuits

Donm, I tried that on a B got the diode from radio shack and also a diode from a tractor repair garage and I didn't have luck with either????? ? I ended up puting the 1 wire module in Alt. and had no further trouble what so ever.All I ever had to do was give the govonor linkage alittle yank after tractor started to excite alt. and it would charge all day. My $.02 worth Justin
