White smoke has always been a sign of moisture being "steamed" off in a gas engine. Only in a diesel have I seen white smoke when cold. Black smoke, too rich in fuel, blue smoke burning oil, white smoke usually a coolant leak into the cyls somewhere. I wonder if perhaps as you go up hill one of the freeze plugs in the head is seeping coolant into the oil? Those freeze plugs are known to corrode and leak with age. I would think that under load however is when it would leak most. Won't hurt to pull the valve cover and look around in there.

Dave,
Usually visable white smoke in a gas engine is a sign of head gasket failure or the gasket starting to fail. I've also seen that same senerio with a cracked cylinder head(s). Blue smoke usually means poor oil control in the engine. (ie-rings,valve guides, etc) Kinda wierd though, that it shows only going up hill! The only thing you can do is watch the crankcase oil to see if it starts to change & the coolant if it starts to go down in the radiator. I wouldn't run it to long like that though, you could do some engine damage.... Steve B.

You could have an oil return passage at the rear of the head clogged up but I would expect to see blue smoke. You might try running the engine with the valve cover off and watch the oil to see if it is returning ok. Have you removed the spark plugs to see if any one looks different in some way from the other 3?

I'm interested in the answer as well. Might it be blue smoke that just looks white against a blue sky? If it is blue though, curious that it would do it going up a hill but not under load. How steep of a hill, and in what gear?

This a gas rig and not deisel? On a deisel white smoke out the exhaust is usually a sign of unburned fuel and usually get it on a cold start. Possibility of water if gas engine? Hope someone can answer this-am very curious myself.

Could you have too much oil in it???

Maybe the oil is foaming.????

Is the breather clean..?? I assume, it is white smoke, out the exhaust.???
