Happy New year.I just bought an Allis Chalmers G tractor that has not been run for several years. The owner told me it ran fine when he parked it. I took out the plugs, oiled the cylinders and it turns (watching the crankshaft pulley) for 1.5 turns and then it locks up solid. The dist rotar shaft turns until it locks up. It is in neutral and with the clutch in ...same thing. It has factory installed hydraulics..The lever on the hydraulic valve does not want to enage..Any thoughts would be very welcome.Mark in Oregon.

I LEARNED THE HARD WAY ABOUT TRYING TO START AN ENGINE THAT HAS NOT RUN IN SOME TIME. WHETHER THE CRANK WILL TURN OR NOT, CHECK ALL THE VALVES AND MAKE SURE NONE ARE STUCK. YOU COULD END UP WITH BENT PUSHRODS OR WORSE.

If it turns 1 1/2 complete turns, there is nothing on top of a piston. The camshaft would turn about 3/4 of a turn (1/2 of crankshaft), so I would say you have one valve that is rusted in the closed position. Remove the cover on the side of the engine and use some Blaster or WD-40 on the valve stems. Let it soak a while and try turning motor over again.

these motors are flatheads so there is no way for the pistons to contact a valve that is stuck open

Not familar with the G's engine, but it sounds like a valve might be stuck open and the piston is hitting it. I would take the valve cover off and make sure all the valves are free, otherwise if you try forcing it something will get broke.

Mark: I can't speak with a lot of personal knowledge on stuck "G's", but several years back I bought a used "G" motor that did the same thing as yours. I removed the plugs and put some penetrating oil in each cylinder. Then using a big socket on the nut that is also used to hand crank the motor, I got the crankshaft to turn slightly back and forward. I kept working it very easily not forcing it and it finally went all the way around. Then I used the starter to turn it and after it freed up nicely I put the plugs back in and it started. Bad news is, I ended up overhauling it, it used the same amount of motor oil as it did gas. If you do this, be careful not to unscrew that crank nut when turning the motor backward. Good Luck!
