Uh Oh, I was trying to start my '52 CA (it had flooded). I didn't crank it for more than 3 seconds when a big bang and now, NOTHING. There is a big black cylinder thingie on the right side of the engine (bear with me, I'm blonde) that the starter lever pushes but now *nothing happens. (I bought a manual and promptly lost it within 2 days.) So is the cylinder thing actually the solenoid or a component of the starter? Can I pull- or crank-start it? Where can I get a crank? I'm getting crank-y!! I' don't know what to do next! The battery is fine, that was the first thing I checked.

Find a local starter/generator/alternator repair shop in your area. They can fix the old starter for a lot less than you'll get one from a place like NAPA and you'll have a better starter by fixing your old one.
Your description of the problem is too vague to diagose over the internet. Good luck.

Laura, If you get a hand crank, be careful when you crank it. It is easy to get hurt if the tractor "kicks" backward as you crank it.Mine "kicks" once in awhile. I always just pull up on the crank. That way if it does "kick" it will just pull out of your hand. What state are you from? Maybe someone close to you could help you. Don't want any "blondes" getting hurt!!!!! LOL Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Harold

Laura,
Your CA has no solenoid. The push rod is manual linkage for operating the starter (the black cyilnder thingie). The starter may have been damaged (the big bang). There is a big set screw in the housing just ahead of the starter. Remove the set screw, push rod, battery cable and then the starter. It may have only locked up....this proceedure will loosen it. Worst case...broken nose on the starter. Duey

If its like my 57 ca. it has a mechanical starter button that sits on top of the starter. that could be bad or it may need a new starter.if you have a NAPA auto parts in your area they can probably order you one. see if you can get some help to determine what is bad before you buy new parts. the starter set up is fairly simple. If you look on Ebay they sell new replacement hand cranks for the model c. its the same. look under allis chalmers. I hope this helps you. ED

Laura: There is aperson on E-bay that sells hand cranks (new reproductions) for B&C allis trtactors I would think that they would work for a CA. I bought one for an old WC and they are good quality cranks The B and C cranks start around 19.50 I think. Better find out to be sure they would fit a CA. Dave.

LAURA
A CA TAKES A LONGER CRANK THAN A B OR C BECAUSE THE FRONT END IS SETUP DIFFERENTLY. YOU CAN ASK THE SELLER ON EBAY IF IT WOULD WORK IF YOU GOTHAT ROUTE. I WOULD RATHER SEE YOU PULL THE STARTER AND HAVE IT REPAIRED. DO YOU RUN IT ON 6 OR 12 VOLTS? SOMETIMES ON 12 VOLTS THE STARTER HAS MORE TORQUE AND CAN DAMAGE THE STARTER. GOOD LUCK,BOB
