When you convert the allis chalmers to 12 volt from 6 volt, what do they do about the Starter?
I have a model d grader and it has a 12 volt generator and battery but I think the starter is an origingal 6 volt. I just bought this grader and am having starter problems.

The 6V starter will work forever on 12V if you take care not to overheat it. I have 3 tractors that are working this way right now and have been for several years. Check the connections first, especially the starter to engine mating surfaces. This is the ground for the starter. Pull the starter off, clean both surfaces and apply a thin coat of grease to them to help prevent rust. Reinstall the starter and clean the bolts/nuts before reinstalling them, applying the same grease to the threads. Clean all the battery connections on both ends and make sure that your cables are good with no broken insulation or clamp on terminals. Replace them if required with quality 1Ga. or larger wires. Current flow is critical to the operation of your starter. Bad connections slow or stop current flow and cause the symptoms you are experiencing. If these things don't help, have the starter checked out by a reputable shop. A rebuild shouldn't be all that expensive, and will be worth it for ease of starting your grader when you need it.

The six volt starter will work just fine. You do need to be a bit careful, though. Continuous cranking will overheat the starter. I believe the recommendation is something like 20 seconds of cranking, followed by a one minute rest. If your engine is properly tuned, long cranking times shouldn't be a problem.

It is possible that someone overheated that starter. It is also possible that the starter may need to be rebuilt because it is worn.

Ya hit that one right on the head Doug! Don, the starter may have worn bushings in it and she's dragging a bit from spinning faster. Are you hearing any noise while she spins?. Steve B.

Most of the time a 12 volt system can handle the same starter. It adds electricity which makes more heat. Check if the starter is HOT if it is you have a short in it and it will need a rebuild job. Bad cables sometimes short out.

It is spinning very slowly and somnetimes it won't spin at all and just acts like a dead short. I live in Oregon, where is a good place to get it rebuilt, or the parts and I can do it myself. Well maybe, I used to rebuild the old chevy starters. Unless there is a short in it.

I rebuild starters and alternators, but I'm sure there's got to be someone in your neck of the woods that does rebuilding. Check in your local auto parts stores in your town ask them who is a replicable rebuilder locally. They should be able to help ya. Make sure your battery is up to doing the job with a load on it. Also, make sure you have good clean connections on both ends of the battery cables. A lousy connection whether it be on the hot side or the ground side will make a starter spin slowly. Inspect the wiring for any breaks or worn through spots too. Hope this helps... Steve

Look in the yellow pages. There should be something under "Automotive". They would note that they do electrical service too. This might include starter and generator rebuilding.
