I wish to remove the steering wheel off the Model C I am restoring. Unfortunately the manuals do not give an "exploded" diagram of this assembly. It appears as if it should come off after the retaining nut is removed as there appears to be a keyway connecting it to the shaft. However, I have tried unsuccessfully with a hammer and punch to remove it from the shaft. I was thinking of trying a gear puller next. Any thoughts?

Get the hub red hot and it don't even take a 10 pound hammer to whack the bottom of the hub to pop it off. On a hub that size the time involved would be about 2 minutes with a map torch, a little longer if you use a plumbers torch of some kind. The quicker you get it hot to expand the hub the less heat transfers to the shaft which will also expand. The expansion with slow heat will still break the bond of the hub to the taper shaft. The hub is mild steel and the heat will not hurt it one bit. Just burn the paint off.

Apply a liberal quantity of Marvel Mystery Oil to the thread groove at the surface after you remove the nut. Voila! 24 hrs later, the puller will work well.

What was the trick with the steel ball bearing welded to a nut and then hitting it with a hammer???

Hi Mike,

I suspect your C is the same as my '42B. I took my steering wheel off last summer. It came off HARD. The wheel attaches to the shaft on a taper with a keyway. Hammering did not work for me. What did work was applying a good stain with a gear puller and at the same time using heat from a torch on the hub. Finally popped right off.

Same thing here when I pulled my wheel last year. I was beginning to think it was never going to separate. Dang near took my head off when she finally broke loose!
