I have been thinking about the posts on the stolen tractors. It is something that is hard to track and even harder to prevent. Here is my suggestion. Could we create a website or make it part of this one to where EVERYONE I mean FORDS, FARMALL'S, JD, ALLIS, OLIVERS, EVERYTHING... Can post the serial numbers, make, looks of every farm tractor they own. That way when people go to auctions or are looking at buying off someone they can cross check the list and see if it is stolen. Any thoughts?????

one of our local auctioneers requires proof of ownership for a tractor either a title or a reciept or you pay for him to have the authorities run its serial numbers to see if it is hot. I dont know if he got burned once or he just wants to protect his reputation but it seems like a good idea to me. I am sure there is a data bank of stolen tractors probably compiled by insurance companies . Most banks probably would require an origin check before they would give a loan. One way to protect yourself would be to title all your tractors with your state dmv at least it would be in the system if anything happened. Also write down all your serial numbers and take pictures of your machines and store them in a safe place its to late to do it once its been stolen. Happy Holidays T.J.

The only problem with haveing to register with state DMV , it just gives the government another hold on us. Everyone just needs to keep there serial no. kept in a safe place and if there is a thieft, post on this site. We don't need the government to regulate our tractors. The next thing, they would decide that we needed to have safety inspections, catalytic converters, might not pass if tread is a little thin. Dave.

Here, Here, I agree. Keep the governmants away from the tractors!!! I am from Canada where we are still trying to fight the gun registry thing. The last thing we need is to register our tractors. Government registry doesn't help with any illegal activity. Cars have been register for decades yet there is still car theift. Matter of fact there are a lot of people that have got rich making alarms.

Use common sense, keep track of your serial numbers, and store them in a secure place.

And yes post your serial # here if your tractor gets stollen and if anyone finds it they should tell you and contact the authorities (beating the thief comes to mind too, but you had better just call the authorities)

Seams to me that the best way to go about this is to have a place to list all stolen equipment. That way we could print it off and check for it. You never know a tractor stolen two years ago might turn up and could be traced.

It might work personaly I would have a hard time keeping all those numbers in my head would be more inclined to read a reported stolen post and be on the lookout for something that fit that description.

I own a steel stamp company. Some years back our Farm Bureau came up with the idea of every farmer getting a steel stamp and whacking it some where on the tractor AND implements since they were also disappearing from fields. Nothing came of it, but I stamp my initials on everything I got and it gives me some comfort knowing that I certainly could identify my equipment.
