I have an oil leak on my C where the axle comes out of the final drive, so I'm trying to remove the axle to replace the seal. I've removed the bearing nut (under the dust cap on the inside side). It now appears from the shop manual that the next step is to remove the "gear retaining nut" inside the final drive by reaching up from the bottom. The "nut" is actually circular with one flat side. It appears to be on tightly, and I can't get any decent leverage with channel locks. Any expertise would be appreciated. I'm new to this.

the round nut has two flats on opposite sides. i think it is 2-3/4 inch across. I cut a spanner wrench out of 3/8 plate also, with a bar handle about 15 inches long. set it on and beat it good with a 8 pound hammer. Slow, but steady work. You normally can not get a cresent wrench on the nut, it is too wide to go in the housing clearance.

What does one use to cut the 3/8" plate?

i use a band saw. you could use an acetelyn torch alos. if you dont have either, go to a local auto body or repair shop and ask them to "burn out" a plate for you . they could make it from something laying around the junk pile.

The units on my B were so tight to the housing I couldn't get my large pipe wrench on them, between the bull gear and housing. I made a wrench out of some 3/8" steel (ok, an old brush hog blade)that fit into the housing and on the nut. I bolted the wheel back on, put the wrench on the nut, slowly spun the wheel until the wrench was against the housing, then pulled on the tire as hard as I could. Essentially this gave a a 2 1/2' breaker bar with good hand holds. The nut loosened right up.

I'll have to try something like this, as soon as I figure out how to make such a wrench. As you say, the fit is too tight to get much of a wrench in there. Can't fit a pipe wrench. Thanks.

I replaced the seals & bearings on my C a year ago last summer as well. I used a punch and a hammer to loosen the nut a little and then channel-locks. The first side went tough all the way, yet the other side was a breeze. Thought there was two flats on the nut, but maybe not... Good luck...

Thanks. I'll try the punch prior to the channel locks. Maybe a few wacks. If that doesn't work I can try D13's idea. Thanks again.

Chuck,

You are on the right track. I repaced both seals on my C earlier this year. It was a bear to get those nuts off. I used a large crecent wrench. Once you get it loosened, you have to back it off a little, then slide the axle out a bit, then loosen the nut some more...keep repeating until the nut comes off and you can slide the large drive gear off the axle and pop the axle out. I can vouch that it wasn't a fun job. Just take your time!

I have part numbers for the bearings and seals. Let me know if you'd like them. I'll be glad to send them to you.

Most of the time you can get better leverage with a pipe wrench. Before you put your bearings back in put a some high temp grease and check them out. Strange on the bolt

I & T instructions are, back off gear retaining nut as far as possible and using a soft drift, drive axle towards wheel side until gear retaining nut can be unscrewed completely.

That's the problem. I can't back off the gear retaining nut at all because of its strange shape (strange to me anyway). The "nut" is circular, except for one flat side, and about 2 3/4" diameter.

Yoy do not have to remove the axle to replace the seal. What I do is take a small drill bit and drill through the side of the seal, then use a small dent puller to pull the seal out. thenfind something like a piece of pipe to go over the axle and drive the new seal on. Hope I can make it easier for you. Dave.

Dave:
That will work for any tractor with a straight axle like a 190XT, 200 or D19, but it will not work for the axle seal on a C tractor.
