The no. is near the top of the machined surface where the end of the brake spring is hooked. Clean this machined surface good and you may find it. They can be covered with paint or rust and be hard to see and find. If it really isn't there the tractor could be an early one, I think they made a few with the serial no. on the machined surface where the cover to the brake bolts on. You would have to remove the left brake cover on top of the brake housing to see it if it is here.

The operator's manual shows a number on the early WD on the left side of the differential, OUTSIDE of the brake cover- number in the 4000 range, along with the number in the usual place, on the vertical surface of the differential, left side, rear face, near the brake spring hole.
