I have an allis chalmers D grader. It seems to be very high geared. 1st gear gives me about 8-10 mph. I bet this sucker would do 60 in high gear!! Does anyone else have one and is theirs also so high geared. Can anything be done to get a better gear ratio? Also I am looking for a cab and power steering for this. I have canceled my membership at the Y as I have built great muscles just from turning this thing.

It doesn't have a two speed gear box somewhere and you are using "road speeds" ??

Where would the shifter be if it had a 2 speed box? I know some of the old ford 9n's had them. I have looked and can't find it. I am using 1st gear.

I don't know, that was just a guess. I suppose if one is not in plane sight it could be something you need to get off and move, although I have never heard of such an arrangement and I think it is unlikely. It would seem that there should be some way to slow it down though as from what you say it would be pretty useless for any work at the speeds you have. Are the numbers on the shift pattern easily readable, could you be in the wrong position for first I mean?

It is my understanding that the D series graders came with a standard 4-sp trans and there was an optional direct / under gear box. I had a 1960 diesel model and it had the optional low gear box.

I have an AC-D grader also. It is geared a little fast but doesn't sound as fast as yours. Perhaps you have oversize tires. I believe it should be 7.50 X 20. You could try an even lower profile tire on the drive wheels. Good luck. Greg
