WD 45 Diesel

A friend of mine has a WD 45 diesel that he can't get to run right no matter what. It smokes, slobbers, and is hard to start without either. Rebuilt pump and injectors. The head is from a D-17 but the pistons are flat tops. What should we do to get this thing to run good? Any advice would be great.

The Bosch injection pump on this tractor can be installed 180 degrees out and it will start and run with the symptoms you observed: smokes, slobbers fuel, won't start without either, etc. I am speaking from experience and here is what I discovered. Even though I had the timing mark on the engine gear and pump correctly aligned, the pump was internally 180 degrees out. I had a technician from the AC dealer come to my farm and educated me! It ran fine 30 minutes later after timing and reinstallation. Follow the procedure in the AC book or I & T manual. Yes, I understand the work involved in removing all of the injector lines and unbolting the pump, but this is the only way you can confirm proper timing. Also, keep in mind that the tractor my have multiple problems: energy cells, injectors, fuel supply, etc. Priming is also difficult because AC did not install a priming pump. I put one on mine from a 190 or 200 - can't remember. Don't get discouraged and keep us posted! Tom

Does yours have a WD 45 head or a D 17 head? Or does it really make a difference which head is on the tractor?

My tractor has the 230 cubic inch block and head which is standard for the WD45. The D17 has a 262 cubic inch block and I don't know if the heads are interchangeable from the 230 to the 262. Both engines are Allis-Chalmers so maybe the heads can be swapped. The D17 has a Roosa-Master injection pump and the WD45 has a Bosch. The D17 has a slightly higher compression ratio. I milled the head a few thousands on mine to bring the compression ratio up a little. When I rebuilt the engine, I put in standard sleeves and pistons and turned the crank .020. I set the power at 50 horse which is about 6-7 horsepower higher then the factory setting. Hope some of this is useful information. Tom

As far as I can tell the only difference in the heads is if the waterpump bolts to the head or to the block. I have two early D-17d's and both heads have different casting numbers, but both have waterpumps that bolt to the heads. My D-19d has the waterpump bolted to the block, like the WD45d, and if I understand right they interchange. The late D-17d's are the same as the D-19's. There are different casting numbers for the heads without the waterpump also. If I have this right, the latter ones have more metal around the energy cells so they don't burn out so quickly.
