i forgot which wires go to which posts on the gen
should i try it both ways and see which works the best? the wires are old and crusty so they
have no color. send help.

the terminals on the generator should be marked also. stamped in the housing next to the terminals is "F" and "A", whcih as posted go to the "F" and "G" terminals on the voltage regulator.

On my 1958 diesel, the inboard wire (closest to the engine) goes to the "field" terminal on the regulator and the outboard wire goes to the "armature" or "generator" terminal on the regulator.
