I am having a hard time getting my ammeter, and light switch hooked up correctly. I think I have it, but want to make sure before I start buying a new light switch to fix my problem. Three wires from the negative ammeter going to the generator cutout, light switch and ignition. One wire going from the positive ammeter to starter. Two wires from the light switch. One to the generator and one to the lights. One wire from the ignition to the coil.

Does this sound correct, or you can look at my diagram on the following link.

Thanks
Jeff S.

I may have found a potential problem. I just discovered that the previous owner (my dad) installed a new 2 position ignition switch. Does this change the wiring any. The igntion switch still gets a wire from the - ammeter terminal? then the wire goes to the coil.

Steve and Duey got the right idea. One of the biggest problems is the light swithc having a bad ground. If you want to check things out because it wont charge, you need to know what it is doing---- The resistor on the light switch is a voltage dropping unit that makes the "F" terminal from the generator have more restirction to ground and therefore charge less. you should get 3 amps with the lights off and then 8 amps when the lights are on. The resistor does nothing when lights are on, the "F" goes straight to ground--
To test, ground the "F" terminal at the generator. Start the tractor and measure the voltage across the "F" and "G" terminals. IF you got it now, then the resistor or lights switchis bad or not grounded. IF the cutout relay is good, then you will get voltage on the "output" as well as the input which is connected to the "A" terminal on generator. I guess you know this is a positive ground 6 volt system.

Thanks for the help, I plan on working on it tommorrow. The specific problem is that the ammeter shows no charge with switch pushed in, about 5 amps with lights on and no charge again with switch pulled all the way out.

Thanks again.

Jeff S.

should be about 3 amps with switch off, thru resistor, then about 8 amps with light on (no resistor). sounds like a bad wire, or maybe the resistor is failed???? ---or your ampmeter is not sensitive enough to see the low current, maybe.

Jeff,
Just got a chance to brouse on the site and saw your message here. What seems to be the problem that your having? Not charging? Your wiring looks okay, but can't see in your pix where on the switch you have things running. Maybe I can help you out here. The "F" field circuit runs to the switches resistor terminal. (The one the hangs out) It looks like the ign. circuits are correct. The headlights & tail run off the "S" on the switch. Starter circuit is correct-to (+) side. Make sure your headlight/charging switch is grounded correctly. Also, if your running a 508 series Delco volt regulator, (OEM style) that you have a wire running from the other leg on the relay to the "A" armature post on the generator, and you should be okay as far as I can see. It's tough to tell what you have there with a non-structured diagram. Fuse circuit is correct. Before you decide to buy a new headlight switch, I restore them for AC folks, so don't condem it yet. It may be working okay.... Any other questions, drop me a line I'd be glad to help ya... Steve B.

Jeff,
Check out this schematic to see if it will help. Duey
