I need to replace the oil seal on a 1949 c chalmers. The oil seal is the one that keeps rear end oil from draining out the drain holes on the bottom of axle housing.does any one know if the axle shaft will come out after i take the end cap off.Do I need to take axle out first or will the whole axle housing and drop axle come out togather.Need help in Michigan.

Bill, i think what you are talking about is the inner axle seal. THe transmission bolts to a differential/PTO housing under the seat. Both compartments are lubed by the same oil fill next to you left foot on the side of the transmission. Outside of this "box" you have a drop box and final drive housing on each side. These are held to the differential housing by 4 studs, probably 5/8 inch coarse. When these 4 nuts are removed you can slide the entire left or right drop box off the tractor. The axle will come with this housing. It is splined on the end and slips into the differential gear (bevel set inside the differential). Block one wheel about an inch off the ground. Take that tire of. You can leave the "hub" on the sprocket shaft if you wish. You need to rig it good and remove the 4 big nuts then slide the entire housing out about 6 inches and the axle shaft will pull out of the differential housing. You will see the bearing and seal at this point. If i was you i might consider removing the final drive sheet pan cover and chekcing out things inside. chekc side clearance on the bottom shaft, then push pull on the top axle shaft and see if things wiggle. Might be time to reshim the bearings if you have any play. I suggest going to Farm Store and getting an IT book with pictures.

Bill,
When you remove the whole housing assy, be ready cause those dudes are heeavvy! I used a block n' tackle to support the weight when I slid both sides off on my B. They are awkward, so watch yer' back! It wouldn't hurt to have another body there to help ya either. By the way, I stock those final drive seals if ya need em'. Steve B.
