Hi all. My C has been getting gas in the oil and making it rise way over the fill mark on the dipstick. And I was wondering what would cause this? My engine smokes REAL bad and I figure that the piston rings and valves are worn letting the gas and oil mix causing the oil to rise and also causing the smoke. Does this sound too far off? I guess I need to get my engine rebuilt. And, I you guys were rebuilding your engine what would you replace? I have had the head off and looked at the sleeve's and they do not have the ridge at the top of the sleeve. So, do I just do the valves, bearings, and rings or should I do the sleeve's too? And also, Where can I get a compression gauge? Just for the heck of it, I think I would like to check the compression. Thanks,TractorMike

Mike, i may be way off base, but if the carburetor float valve sticks you can flood the carburetor and get gas thru the manifold into the cylinders and then into the crankcase. When the tractor is shut off, do you shut off the fuel valve under the tank? Is the tractor hard to start after setting a couple days? Is the oil level o.k. before you start up and get worse as the tractor runs, or does the gas get into the crankcase when motor is off? Kind of a stretch, but something to check. Dick is right on the rings. Bought a old Ford truck for the boy and it had problems similar to what you describe. Tore down motor after a year of problems and it had standard rings in .030 overbore pistons. had about 1/8 inch end gap on the rings. Not a pretty site what happened to the piston skirt with blowby.

Steve, Lately when I have run it I have shut off the fuel when the tractor is running and let it run out of gas. I only ran it a couple of times without letting it run out of gas. But if I let it sit for a couple of days, I can go right back out and start it up no problem. As I run it, the oil level gets higher and higher. When I put it back together the oil was a little low, then it went to about half way between fill and full, the it went to full, and then it went way over full. I did this before I took it apart. maybe someone did overbore the sleeve's and put standard rings in, Or they are just so worn that they are letting the gas through? Any ideas? TractorMike

A compression check would be good. NAPA will have a gauge. They will have different priced gauges. If you had the head off and did not have a ridge and you are getting that kind of blow by, I would guess that someone has reamed and honed the sleeves and put standard rings on the pistons. When placing a ring by its self square down in the sleeve, you should only have .007 distance between the ends. I have not been able to find oversize rings for some time. For this reason I order standard rings for a 1952 chevy and hand grind each ring to fit the sleeve it will go in with the .007 spacing. Yell if you want a more detailed instruction on had fitting rings.

Dick L, Yes I would like you to send me more detailed info on custom fitting rings. Also, where do you get the measuring tool to measure to 0.007" ? Thanks, TractorMike

A BAD FUEL PUMP CAN CAUSE GAS TO GET INTO THE OIL,ALSO PROLONGED CRANKING BEFORE STARTING.

If you have a bad fuel pump on an Allis B you'd better be pulling it professionally.

Stan is right, prolonged cranking will wet the cylinders and drip fuel past the rings. Same thing with a stuck carb float causing a continuous rich condiiton or even filling the air cleaner with fuel.

There is a port on the bottom of the carb air throat that is there to let gas overflow out to prevent this. In my years of messing I've only found 1 that actually would let gas out when the float stuck.
