I am looking at an old allis chalmers B. Today i looked at the serial number that is right by the shifting lever. It read "B-1-2912". Can anyone help me out here? I would like to know the year. Also it would appear to have electric start but i don't think it is original on that tractor.
It doesn't have a generator and i looked for a place to mount one and could find any threaded hole for a bracket at the front of the engine.
Some one had but electronics on it at one time. It now has a coil and distributor. However i don't think that is original.
It also has hand brakes.
If i buy it i would need a few items for it.
1: new gas tank.
2: new tin that is under the stering rod.
3: New back rim
Can these things still be found? I restored an old D-17 this year and thought that this would be another project to carry me through the winter. I would like to here and advice about these model tractor. He wants $1000 for it and to me that seems a little high. It does run and have newer tires on the rear. Hood, grill and fenders are ok.
Does that sound like a fair price?
Thanks
John

John,
Your B is an early tractor with hand brakes. Came originally with magneto. I agree with Justin and John on the price. I think it's a tick on the high side. But hard to say without looking at it. You can find the parts for it to do a resto. Maybe you can negotiate a little better price with the seller. They make a great tractor all done. I have a 48' B and had a ball restoring it.
Good Luck! Steve B.

If its B12912 then it would be a 1939. I do not know about the "-" dash between the 1 and 2. The serial # for 1939 started with 11800 through 33393. It would be a very early 1939. I have a 39 with serial# 31915 and it has hand brakes and manual start only. There is no place on the torque tube for a starter. I have heard of several 39's with starters only but I think they must have had the tube replaced. The '39 was magneto ignition. I think $1000 would be high considering the missing tank, sheet metal, and rim even though it would be nice to be worth that. Finding these parts will require some research and money. To put it back original it sounds like it would need some other replacement parts. I would think $400 to $500 might be a fair price but what it is worth to you might be different. In the real world $1000 is not much for what you would be getting...Good Luck, John in NC..... ..
