Did a 1938 allis chalmers "B" have a generator?
If so were was it mounted at. Also were these tractors originally 6 volt? Did they have a coil or a mag? Also did the 38 b's have electric start?
I have the chance to buy one. It has electric start but now generator. Maybe someone can tell me if that is original equipment.
If i buy it i would like to put it back to original condition with the help and advice of the people using this board.
Thanks
John

As I understand this should be hand brakes crank start no generator.

My '39 has generator electric start foot brakes belt hydr PTO. I suspect it's a 46 with an earlier trans (I've herad the late model trans was fond of hopping out of 1st gear when it got worn - quicker to swap in a complete trans than fix).

John I do not believe that the 38 B had a generator. If it did then it would be mounted in front
of the carb. the block would have two threaded
holes for the mount. the ones that had generators
and starters, lights were 6 volt positive ground.
it should have a mag.
also look in the reasearch and info section
og the ytmag home page

I just completed a 1939 B. It has no generator or electric start or any electricals except for the magneto, points and plugs and wires. It doesn't even have a place to mount a starter in the housing. In a way it is nice because there is no battery oer major electricals to maintain. You do have to hand crank it but I have found that to be real easy if you have the ignition and fuel properly adjusted. It normally cranks on the first or second jerk. The only real pain is if you stall or cut it off since you have to climb down from the seat to restart. I am real happy with it. Also the 39 has hand brakes instead of foot brakes. I first thought this might be a real problem but once you get used to the idea of using your hands instead of feet it is ok. I still would rather have foot brakes but it would not be original. Its a little unnerving to take your hand off the steering wheel to brake but only if you are on a hill. I think it is neat to own a vintage model that does not have all the luxuries of newer tractors as it is a great conversation piece. If you were buying the tractor for making a living with farming then I would probably not have bought this old a model, but I was interested in the show aspects and nostalgia of the 39' model B. I have a picture posted on the gallery if you want to take a look... Good Luck..John

The one i am looking at has a starter. What year did they start putting starters on B's
It also has the hand brakes. When did they change that?
Is it possible that someone tried to put a starter on it at one time?
I looked at the seriel number and it looks like a 1938 model i think.
thanks
John

John, It is possible that someone took a newer style torque tube with the starter and put it on your tractor?. Just a thought, TractorMike
