Timing a Magneto

Anyone know how to time a Fairbanks/Morse Mag for a 1945 C AC? The rotor gear has the letters A and C about a tooth apart from each other. The small gear in the center of the points has one tooth that looks flat. Every time I think I have it in time the engine will start but sounds labored and after being shut off fails to start again until I try retiming the mag. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

due to the impulse thats built into a magneto, you have to time an ac with no. 1 up like the other man said.,however you must impulse your magneto,turn it clockwise. until no.1 is resdy to fire,then it should start and run. if it still sounds labored,check your fuel to air mixture or carb.,it could be to lean. richard taylor southern okla.

The A and C stand for anti-clockwise and clockwise, respectively. Your C Allis like most tractor engines should be timed clockwise. The JD is about the only Anti-clockwise engine I can think of. The engine should be turned to were the #1 cylinder is on the top of the compression stroke, both valves should be closed. The the magneto should be installed with the rotor pointing toward the #1 spark pole. After the engine is started adjust the timing to Manufactures specs. Later
