What plugs work best in a B, it a 1939, w/ mag and no electric stuff, starter, lights, battery, etc.

I have been sticking in what we had laying around... they work for awhile then quit... Thought maybe we would try the correct ones....

Dan,
The choice of plug lately seems to be the Autolite 295. I'm trying NGK's right now just to try them out, and so far the engine is purring. The NGK number is a B6S, but like I said, the majority seems to like those 295's. Some folks have good luck with the J8 Champions, but I never had any good luck with Champions in anything....

For 25 years I had been using Champion J-8's in my '39 model "B" (magneto ignition and crank start) and not really thrilled (understatement!!) about spark plug performance. Last week I asked this same question and on the advice of several people on this board, I switched to AutoLite 295's.

The best way I can state the results: it's like my motor and carb have been rebuilt for the price of 4 plugs.

The last discussion we had on this arrived at Autolite 295 plugs for magneto tractors and Autolite 303 plugs for battery ignition (although you can use 295's if you like). The 295 is a non-resistor plug that you need for the magneto system, and the 295 is a little hotter than a 303 (according to Autolite the last digit indicates temp range in the plug). (Note - you also want copper-core plug wires for the magneto ignition. Don't use the fiber-core stuff. It means more static for nearby radios but the tracotr runs better.)

We've used Champion J-8's, AC 45's (and AC R45's ) and now I'm trying the Autolite 303. I can tell you that 303 works much nicer than the Champions and also seems better than the AC's. Allis tracors just don't seem to get along with Champions at all for some reason .....
