Slipping clutch on WD

Well, the IT manual is absolutely no help on this. I have a slipping engine clutch on my WD. I tore it apart yesterday, and was surprised how good things looked. No burnt smell or discolored metal. The rivets were still well under the surface of the clutch disk friction material.

I replaced the clutch disk about 5 years ago when I rebuilt the engine. I did have trouble adjusting the clutch to get enough disengagement, and the tractor has always had a tendency to grind when changing gears. Otherwise, everything was fine until recently when the slipping started. The pedal had plenty of free play, so it's not an adjustment problem. I'm sure it was the engine clutch, because when the clutch was slipping, the PTO was not turning.

The clutch disk measures about .325" thick. I guess I'm suspecting the pressure plate. Any other ideas? By the way, it's the Rockford clutch, not the Auburn unit

You may have a pressure plate with some weakening springs... You could take it out, and replace the springs...but you will need a press to re-compress the unit....!! I would install 9 springs, instead of the original 6... The late WD-45 pressure plate had all 9 springs, and have held well on mine, even with the power kit... Ofcourse, if there is oil..... .you can wash it down with brake cleaner, with the clutch locked dis-engaged...you won't get it all out, but, it should improve..!! 4x14" will put a major load on the clutches, and I depend on the foot clutch, to start with the plow in the ground...ya don't need any clutch slippage, when the front is off the ground, and you are steering with the brakes...!!!

Hi Gary

Look at your forks that go againest the throwout bearing. Did you have trouble shifting? Was the tractor not moving or pto not turning?

Good luck !!

Gary,
While you have it apart, look in the bell housing above the clutch shaft. There is a small tapped hole. This is the hydraulic oil reservior breather. If at anytime, the reservior was overfilled, it will give the clutch a oil bath. I plugged this hole and installed a cylinder breather in the reservior cover under the starter. (welded a pipe coupler at an angle left of the starter)Inside, under this cover, is a small brass elbow screwed in the tapped hole. Duey
