Thanks

Well now, I have kohler engine, a small one of cource. I have flames that come out of it and it is caused from the valves. In lifes lessons I find the basic principle is the best teacher. At any rate this was a free opion.

Hi, John. Not real sure what causes the flames but my friend and former owner of my Oliver 1600 gas tractor was smiling wide at the last pull. I weighted down the 1600 on a bet and pulled it in the 9000# stock class. (it's stock) Blue flames 6 inches out the 4 inch chrome stack as it clawed down to 2-3 feet from the JD 4020 diesels! My friends on the 4020's stopped laughing as I downshifted the Hydra Power and nearly beat them! Can't wait for spring. Don

Our WD's, even when new from the dealers, would always put out a flame under heavy load. Can't see it much in daylight but plowing at night the whole manifold will be cherry red with a nice blue flame at the stack. Pretty sight to go along with the working sound of the engine. Never caused any problems with our tractors.

I checked out the timing today. It was out. I ended up turning the distributor 1/2 inch counter clockwise to get it in time using a timing light.
I'm no mechanic but to me seeing flames coming out of the muffler when there shouldn't be any is a bad thing. I didn't want to take the chance of burning the valves. Now with the timing set correctly, and the electronic ignition the old d-17 runs better then it ever did. Later

On my project I started last March, My WD-45 was shooting flames also. Mine was shooting flames at idle and were mostly yellow in color. This turned out to be timing. I advanced it, and now sounds and runs good. If the flame is blue and under load, then that is normal.. I still get an ocassional flame when operating at high idle, then pop the throttle closed.

John,

Timing can have an effect on what comes out the exhaust pipe, or in this case stack, but usually it's the fuel mixture that plays a big part of the "fireworks" display. Lean mixes tend to heat up a manifold, stack, or header to where it would glow. Rich mixes add the "Burzamatic" effect. Depending on how much load the engine is under, and the fuel she's quenchin', unburned fuel coming out a super hot exhaust manifold or header can be an awesome site. I ran a Pro Dragster many years ago, and depending on how much fuel we put to her, at the 1000 foot mark all 8 candles were lit in the evening hours! Steve B.

Don't think so. At night my tractor and a lot of other gas rigs will belch fire at night when shut down the throttle or when the govenor opens up on a pull. I think this is just hot gasses that are their even in the day time.

I have a WD45 that will put a flame out when you crack the throttle to idle, and a D19D that will put a foot of fire out when the going gets tough.
