I swiped a generator and regulator from a D-17 IV and converted a CA to 12v neg ground. It worked fine for a while then if you closed the cutout relay by hand it would work. I replaced it with a new one and it worked longer but the same problem happened. Some one suggested the change from pos to neg ground was the problem, but the new regulator has ink stamped on the back "12v NEG". Yes, an alternator would be the trouble free way to do this, but I didn't like the look of the alternator conversion and refuse to admit defeat by two parts that were engineered to work together. Any ideas? Thanks for any help. Brian

I agree with Craig. I have an early D17 and it has positive ground. I doubt that they would change to negative ground for later models. I had an experience years ago where someone put a battery in backwords on a 1955 Ford (6 volt system - positive ground). It had regulator problems until the battery was put in correctly. As far as I know, my D17 has the original generator/regulator. We bought it new in the late 50's.

The D-17 IV that I have worked on are pos. ground. I would put on 12 volt pos. regulator polarize it and see what happens.
