I've got a '39 model "B". What are the best spark plugs to use in this ol' gal (manufacturer and P/N) ?

Thanks - Ron

Thanks guys. It sounds like I should dump the Champion J-8's I've been using. I was not happy with them as they seemed to carbon up (no sign of oil though) after I ran them for a while. Carb adjustment did not help.

Autolite without question. I've used Autolite, Champion, and AC brands - and the Autolite is by far the best in an AC. AC's don't seem to like Champions at all for some reason.

We had this discussion some time back - I remember we arrived at Autolite 295 for magneto ignition tractors, and Autolite 303 for distributor ignition tractors. That's been working fine for me up through the WD / WD45 series of tractors. I think the later D series would take something else, but eve early D14 / D17 might use these.

I have been using Autolite 295 and 303 with good results. The 295s go in fresh, or good engines and 303s go in ones that use a bit of oil. Others will argue but my magneto man told me to stay away from resister plugs with magnetos. That eliminates A-C as the old 45s are no longer with us, replaced by resister R45s

I was just wondering why you use the 295 in a good engine and the 303 in a worn engine. According to the Autolite book, the 295 is a hotter plug than the 303. Wouldn't you use a hotter plug in an engine that's using a little oil?

Dan, I was told the other way around, 295s being the same as the old A-C 45s and 303s being the same as A-C 46s Guess since the 303s run OK in the worn engines I'll just use them in the rebuilt ones too. Thanks

The last digit on the Autolite plug is supposed to indicate heat range, so Dan's right on - the 295 should be hotter than the 303. Oh, well .... now we have to be spark plug gurus as well as cooling system/carb/transmission/engine/electric/hydraulic gurus ....but would we have it any other way? ;-)

I just copied this info from Q & A section on the Autolite website..... ..... ..... ..... .....What do the numbers on a spark plug mean?
Every spark plug company has a unique numbering system that may or may not have some built in meaning. Autolite® spark plug numbers indicate the heat range with the last number of the part number. Everything previous to that, regardless of the number of digits, can only be used to indicate a similar design (spark plug family). For example, a 23 is one heat range colder than a 24. 3924 is one heat range hotter than the 3923. The 23 and 24 will look exactly alike, but they will not look like the 3923 or 3924.

Some part numbers also use prefixes to indicate special features. AP as in AP24 indicates a platinum center wire on a 24. APP indicates a platinum center wire and a platinum ground (or side) wire. MP is for motorcycle platinum and WC is especially for personal watercraft.

I would recommend Autolite #295 spark plugs. They are a non resistor type plug. I always used to use AC Delco 45 but that plug is no longer manufactured..you have to use R45 which is a resistor type plug. I also noticed that they didn't last as long when this AC plug started to be manufactured in Mexico.

Ron, I have a 1936 B and I run A/C 44 (GM) plugs in it. My tractor is crank start and has no charging system on it. My dad gave me the tractor and had run the same style of plugs for 30 years. It never misses a lick. Hope this works for you.
