Front Crank Seal

The front engine seal on my '50 B is dripping oil. I want to replace the seal. However, the mechanic at the AGCO dealer says that there is an alignment tool to align the seal and the crank, and he no longer has one and is not going to buy one for just one job.

Looking in all of my manuals, I can't see a reference to an alignment tool. I looks like that the seal is drive out/drive in.

Is there such a tool? If so, what is an alternate method of alignment. I think I'll try it myself. It can't leak much worse than it does now.

Thanks for any advice.

Rick, When I replaced my front oil seal, My old one was so worn that I just took a pair of pliers and took it out. When I put the new seal in, I just pressed it in there than taped it in the rest of the way with a hammer. It hasn't leaked since. You may need a puller to get the crank pulley off. If your lucky like I was, you won't have to take the timing cover off. Hope this helps. TractorMike

To get the old seal out of the timing cover you have to remove it and the mechanic is right about the alignment, there is quite a bit of room for the cover to move around on the bolts. Has to be pretty close or the new seal will leak as bad as the old one. There is an easy way to get around the tool though. Without the seal, install he cover just snug enough so it will stay where you push it. The sealing surface on the crank sticks out just far enough to slide the seal on the crank without the OD being in the cover recess. Then eyeball the relationship of the seal to the cover, line it up, tighten the cover bolts and then install the seal. Couple other things, there was at least two different lip seal sizes used and the early engines used a cork seal that has no direct replacement in a lip seal. Your 50 should be a lip seal though. If the crank has a groove it it you can get a speedy sleeve to repair it or stop a little short of knocking the seal clear in, done it both ways depending on how bad the crank is. You will need the oil pan gasket along with the timing cover gasket.

Butch,

Thanks for the info.

Is the oil seal pressed in from the back (crank) side of the engine cover, or the front (pulley) side?

The seal comes out the front and can be taken out the way Dick L suggested. I didn't give that a thought as every one I have worked on the cover had to be moved and as I posted afterwards, the gasket is usualy cemented so the cover has to come off anyway to replace the gasket.

Ya kin pull that seal out wit a small slide hammer. Jus make da hole fer da puller screw wit a awl rather dan a drill bit. Ya know what an awl is dontcha, its one of them small pointy thingamajigs fer makin holes in leather.

Yeppers I know what awl is, yer talken bout motor awl right, or hydraulic awl? an that thing fer leather is a leather punch, see I knows ma tools an awls.LOL Either was a whole bunch of them covers put on wrong at some time or I am just unlucky. Every one I work on the dang cover aint on right and has to be moved which means take it off cause the gasket been glued which means the pan gotta come off too. Rick if your cover is centered, Dick's way will work, he oughta know as he's worked on a bunch of em.
