Hello can anyone tell me where to get the specs. for the air cells for a 1958 D-17 262ci? I know some of them are bad the holes are out of round and it has a misfire until it warms up. I rebuilt the engine two years ago so I know everything else is right but the new air cells are $100.00ea. so I don't want to buy any more than I need. Thanks Todd

I have a question? What is an air cell and where is it located? How do you check if it is good or bad?

Thanks!

Jon

the air cells are are what generates heat during compression to ignite the fuel. each cylinder has an air cell it straight across from the injector. look on the top right side of the head you should be able to see the strap clamps one on each cell they are held in place by studs remove those and there will be a round disk remove it and the cells have threads in side. screw a bolt into it and pull straight out you might need to use a slide hammer to break it loose. the small end should have a smooth taper down to a small hole if it pitted out of round it is probably bad. what i'm trying to find out is what size hole is to large to work properly. hope this helps todd

todd is it bad air cells that cause these motors to miss until they warm up? also will that make them hard to start.i have two 58 d17d's only one is running. but i have 2 complete engines but don't know if any of them are right. i loked in my I&T book and my allis shop man. and all any of them say is if they are pitted or burned replace them,it also says to lap the 2 pieces together. hope this helps if i can do more let me know. david l wilson

I'm not an expert but what I have heard and read hard starting missing and blue smoke at startup can be dirty and/or worn air cells. I know some of mine are worn and pitted. and it is hard to start in cold weather. Todd
