I put in a new battery and a rebuilt starter. Starts easy with the crank but the starter won't turn over the motor.

HI Dail

Yes clean Everythings, use a knife , wire brush or sand paper, etc.

Cover all conection with deoxy, use to control oxydation on AL wire in panels( circut boxes, fuse boxes ) . You can make it your self , vasaline and mineral oil.

Clean all the studs where the nuts are for the cables.

After cleaning and still not starting right. See if the switch for the starter is good , yes any bad connection should make heat. But if your starting it right, not that much. Only hold in on starter for about 5 seconds, old 6 volt starters will not take too much of running 12 volts though them. Trouble being that the commutator ( place where the brushes ride on) get hot and solder comes out , look in the starter at this copper segmented commutator and see if the silver metal is covering the area where the brushes ride if so? Read next paragraph.

Cleaning a commutator:

Becareful mark the parts with lines as to put them back together the same way they came apart.
after you have got the start apart, carefully clean the commutator with very fine sand paper. You are looking to get it smooth and copper color, IF its got too MUCH SOLDER OR PITTS. It may need turned, AS you have to make sure it is not out of round( too badly). If it is a rebuild one I wood say just use sand paper on it. Easy on the sanding. Next you need to get a piont or thin peice or metal clean between the segments of copper to get the solder from between them (not too deep), a sharp nail works ok. Don't go too deep, sand and do again if need , needs to be smooth not sharp, with the grove between segments clean( they must be cleaned). Look to make sure brush are working good( not worn down) and springs are ok and wires. CAREFULLY !! PUT IT BACK TOGETHER. Oil (make sure it is good for electrical) , and should be ready to go.

Good luck !!

Dail,

If clean grounds don't do the trick as Duey mentioned, check the battery cable to the starter motor. Corrosion can build up inside the cable where you can't see it, especially if it's a pretty old cable that's been out in the elements for a while. This kills the power to the starter when the load try's to go through it. If that cable get's hot, it could be the cable itself that's bad... Steve B.

Dail,
Remove the starter and clean the rust from the mounting hole and paint from the starter where it mounts in the hole. Also shine up the area where the battery ground strap fastens. If that doesn,t do it, check all connections for heat being generated when trying to start the engine. A poor connection will generate heat. You may find the cable gets hot indicating it,s not a heavy enough gauge. Duey

where did you get the rebuilt starter? sounds like the bendix gear doesn't match the flywheel
