Hi, Well I have a situation that I would like some other thoughts on. My WC starts very easy when cold and then runs fine for anywhere between 10 minutes to 15 minutes, then she will sputter and die. Then I choke her throw the hand crank around about 2 times and she starts right up again and then does the same silly routine.
1. I have taken the mag off and bench tested it again. Good Blue spark.
2. The sparkplug wire ends have been soldered to the brass connections.
3. New points and condensor were installed about 2 weeks ago, and new plugs.
4. Carb has been rebuilt, but I question how well the needle and seat are working together.
5. Have a new steel gasline, and new sediment bowl.
6. I have checked the gas tank vent cap and it is allowing pressurized air to pass thru holes in cap
7. I am ready for other thoughts..... .

OK, now I have said all that, I have considered that the Condensor could have gone bad and is causing the spark to drop out. I have also thought that maybe the needle and seat are not working right and the needle gets stuck in the shotoff position long enough to stop gas flow, thats why I have to choke her when I have to start her after she is already warmed up. I should also mention she does fight to keep running, its not an abrupt stop its a sputter sputter, lunge lunge, I'm done....No black smoke out the exhaust, no backfires, and she does this sitting still or while moving, and when moving it happens when she is moving slow or moving in a higher gear.

OK, now I am ready for suggestions, and thank you very much I sure do appreciate the help.

SCOTT, A easy temporary fix for rust in the tank is to place some cheap permanet magnets on the bottom of the tank "OUTSIDE". The rust will stay put in the tank and you can drain it down and vacuum it out. When you get time get that tank off and get it sealed. Earl in Illinois

Scott, I don't often post on the AC board, as I don't have one, but check from time to time. Had exactly the same problem on a Farmall 200 a while back. Once I discovered the problem, and cleaned up the inside of the tank, as best I could, (baffles), I went one step further. Removed the sediment bowl assembly. Drilled out the opening in the top to accept a length of automobile radio antenna tube. Inserted tube (force fit) into the mouth of the inlet on the sediment bowl and cut it off so the tube extended up into the tank a little bit. This makes the gas inlet to the sediment bowl half an inch or so above the bottom of the tank. That way rust dirt and flakes settle harmlessly in the bottom of the tank. One of these days, I suppose I'll have to figurew out how to suck the sediment off the tank bottom! Good luck!

Ok, now I did everything that was mentioned and I want to thank each and everyone of you for responding back to my 'Help Posting'. I don't think it hurt one bit for me to check everything and I think the old tractor is better off for it now. OK, the answer was bits of rust flakes in the gas tank plugging the hole to the sediment bowl. It looks like I will be cleaning up rust flakes for awhile. I should mention I had the gas tank fixed, and also the tractor has been sitting in a shed for the last 10years, so I am sure when they fixed the gas tank seam they knocked rust loose. I have a magnet on an extension I will be using periodically to clean out the rust flakes. I have considered now buying some of that liquid liner for the gas tank and sealing her up with that to prevent this from happening and may do so if this becomes to much of a nuisance. So anyway its a nice sunny day, and I am going for ride on the Old Allis like I wanted to yesterday!!!

Thanks again guys, its been fun.
Scott.

Take the sediment bowl off the tank and make sure there is nothing plugging the hole in the bottom of the tank. The next hole to check is in the sediment bowl itself. I had a similar problem and found a dead spider jammed in the sediment bowl hole and one in the hole in the tank.

May want to try running with the gas tank cap removed. I had a problem with my WD that sounds the same. The problem was the check valve in the cap, it worked fine under pressure tests but the motor did not create enough vacuum to open it. I drilled out the check valve and it run's fine.

when electrical problems or vavles are the cause, normally you have to wait until the motor cools down. this sounds more like loss of gas, since it will startup in a couple minutes after the bowl refills. i would check the valve/seat and the fuel filter/ line again. make sure the exhaust manifold bolts/ studs are tight.

When it starts sputtering does choking it help? If so you have a fuel delivery problem. Next time be ready to pull a wire off one of the plugs when it starts to sputter to be sure you have spark until it dies. Stranger things have happened to mags other than to have spark again a minute or two after quitting. Another thing I have seen several times over the years is too tight valve lash. Most of the time this happens after a re-build or valve job when valves are not reset after retorqueing the head but in one case it was due to seat recession .

Hi Butch, I tried choking when it started to sputter, but it didn't make a difference, and yes I wondered about the mag. I also wonder if I have a bad condensor, so tomorrow I am going to go pick up a new one install it and see if the problem disappears.

Thanks Butch,
Scott.
