I just purchased a Allis Chalmers D15 series 2 tractor and I am trying to find out if anyone can tell me where I can find out when this tractor was made.I think it was in the 1960's.It has powersteering and a factory 3 point hitch.Am also trying to find out what type oil to use in it.The manual calls for eather sae regular or high detergant.Thank You

The serial # is on the left side of the engine at the front of the torque tube. There should be a number stamped into it. If its gas, then it is 46 HP. Diesel is like 38 HP. Good luck. Use non-detergent if you are unsure of what the previous owner has been using.

I can't get tractortips.com to work right now - not that I think those numbers are all that reliable. But those hp figures you cited seem closer to that of a D-17, not a D-15.

As I recall, the D-15 was in the same class as the WD.

Doug, I don't want to start an argument with you, but a D15 Series II gas IS 46 HP. I know. I have one. The Series I gas is 40 HP and equal to a WD. The Series II is more equal (a little stronger) than a WD45. The Series I and II diesels are the same (35-40 HP).

To know exactly when this tractor was made, you would need to give us the serial number. That series was made in the 60's, though. As for horsepower, I'd estimate it to be about 35 hp, without looking it up. As the the oil used, I recommend detergent oil in any case, unless you know that non-detergent oil has been used in that tractor, for an extended time. If the manual recommends SAE 30 oil for summer, and SAE 10 for winter, you can use 10W-30 all year. 10W-40 will work nicely too, especially if you are going to use it for more than just parade duty. Oils of today are far better than the oils made 40 and 50 years ago.

Nice tractor, btw. I wished we had one when I was on the farm, instead of the WD. But you know how kids are - they always want a better toy.
