Hi again to my trusty friends. I got my B to turn over- it has been converted to 12v. I pulled a plug out and laid it in some metal and I see no spark. Is there a way I can test the coil without going to a store with it? Also, the delco distributer has a black plastic shield under the rotor covering the points and condenser. What is the best way to remove that cover so I can check the points? Thanks to all the good people who so generously share their wisdom! Joe

Everyone was treamendous help. I bought the lil' B already converted to 12V. The coil was bad along with the ignition switch. When I hot wired the ignition and pushed the button she fired right up and sounds great!!! I also own a WD that is 6v with 8v battery. You are right, an 8 volt battery give it just the right punch. Back to my B, she is starving for gas so I have to clean out the plumbing, but she will plow my snow this winter- for sure.

"How to test coil??"
Remove battery lead from coil terminal and pull the high tension lead from the coil. With ohmmeter set to low scale measure resistance of the primary winding between terminals. Expect 0ne to five ohms but could be higer if coil contains a current limiting resistor. It should not read a dead short or extremly high. With the ohmmeter set to a higher scale measure the secondary winding by measuring between the minus terminal and the high tension contact. Expect 10-15 thousand(k) ohms. If these tests pass you probably have a functioning transformer. Large discrepancies should be suspect.

Converting to 12 volts sometimes sounds attractive, but is not a good idea (in my opinion) Sprucing up your 6 volt tractor is better. Make sure you have the right guage wires, good connections, etc.... 6 Volt is the way it was designed and should run. My B runs 6 volt just fine, I'd sooner take a bullet than change it to 12 volt.

a bullet might be a bit extreme. maybe just a flogging. i do agree to keep them original, and make sure everything is clean and with the right size cables, but if you drop in an 8 volt battery in the 6 volt system you'll be amazed at the difference. alan

Joe,

The cover you refer to is a dust cover. It should just lift off easily. If it doesn't, very gently with a tiny flat bladed screwdriver lift the cover. She'll lift off if yer' careful. It's probably just stuck. It has an "index" on the bottom of it which lines up with the distributor housing. As for spark, I would borrow the wife's nail file (when she's not lookin') and file the points a tick, a little Electramotive spray to clean off the mess and test them again. It just might be a light film or corrosion keeping the current from passing on through.... Steve B.

when the tractor was converted to 12 volt was the coil changed or a resistor added? if not it may have fried the coil. you can usually test by leaving the + wire on the coil, remove the - wire. use a jumper and touch the - terminal to ground quickly, then off. this simulates the point opening. should see a little spark if you do it several times. if you need a resistor, go the NAPA and tell them you have a 6 volt coil on a 12 volt tractor (or buy the new coil with resistor inside).
