Hi all, A couple of weeks ago I bought an AC-C. It was getting water in the oil, so I think it had a bad head gasket. I ordered a new gasket. When I took the head off, there was some rust in the water holes in the head and block. I took the rust out, and I noticed that the head has 5 holes on the left and 5 holes on the right, well on my block there is 5 holes on the left and 4 holes on the right. Tha holes on the right are not as big as thoes on the left and the ones on the right get smaller and smaller. My question is, if I put this thing back together, will I spring a leak in the head gasket again??? and what should I do about the small and uneven holes??? I would put it back together but I don't want to ruin a new gasket. could some one have put the wrong head on? The tractor is a 1941 C, the engine NO. is CE9577K, There is a date on the head that is 9/30/41 if that helps. Also, The push rods on cylinders 2&3 are bent, Can I still use them? I was thinking of bending the push rods back so they would be stright. Thanks, TractorMike

Another place to check for leaks is the freeze plugs in the top of the head. It is not uncommon for them to rust out and allow coolent in the oil.

I would use the pushrods if they aren't bent sharply, that is with a bend you can't work out by CAREFULLY bending them back to straight a little at a time. Maybe clamp them in a vise between two peices of wood so the bend is at the vise jaws and then, a little at a time bend straighter, moving the pushrod as necessary to get the final result very straight.

If the pushrods are hardened, they can be straightened by peening them on the INSIDE of the bend. Place them on an anvil or block of steel and hit them at an angle with a hammer. You should use a dial indicator if you want them perfect.
I've also straightened large dia. hardened shafts by using an acetylene torch. Heat a small dot to orange on the HIGH side and immediately dip it in cold water. Repeat as necessary.

The head is correct and the gasket will work fine. However if you could not see the exact place the head gasket was leaking I would suspect the seals on the sleves and check them before putting the new head gasket on. If you lay a section of an old innertube over the block and bolting the head back on,this will seal the water from comming out the top of the block. Then patch, or (hook up) a water hose into the water pump. put system water pressure into the block. If the seals on the sleeves are bad you will get water seaping into the pan. This will save a tear down later if the head gasket was not the problem.
