Just bought a D21 series II which was doing nothing for the last 10 years. Hydraulic pressure appeared to be low on first use. Oel level is good.
Now I can't steer anymore and of course I have no hydraulic pressure on the connectors either.
I am afraid that the hydralic pump needs to be overhauled.
Questions: Is their maybe a valve which is just stuck? Where is it? Any troubleshooting hints?
Are there parts available to overhaul the pump?

I've had simular problems as you have discribed.
Not on a D21, but other makes of tractors. I am
more inclined to think that the relief valve
plunger is sticking part of the time. Most relief
valves are mounted externally on the tractor and
need to be taked apart, cleaned and polished with
emery, both the plunger and cylinder of the valve.
Might find out where the relief valve is located
and give it a try. Hope this is the problem, it
most generally is quite easy to fix. Just an idea and somewhere to start, good luck.

The flow divider in the pump is probably stuck or plugged with material. The suction screen could be sealed over with sludge.

I have not yet received the service booki for the D21, how difficult is it to clean the suction screen or the flow divider in the pump?
Can you provide a short description or should I better wait for the book?
THANKS
Johannes

P.S.: today it magically worked again so your explanation makes perfect sense!

might also drain off a quart and look at the oil. might have picked up some condensation. might be worth changing out the oil.

Thanks! The oel change almost did the job. Almost because the steering now works much better (half throttle) however the hydraulic is still uite weak. I am afraid that the old oel has done some damage.
What to do? Do I need to rebuild the hydraulic pump? If so are their kids for the D21?
