I just bought a 190xt from a party that couldn't get it started, so the first thing I did when I got it home was check the pump timing, it was set at 50 degrees, so I pulled the gear off the front and jumped it a tooth, but when I had it off I absent mindly turned the pump shaft a few turns, now I'm wondering if the pump timing marks line up when other cylinders are firing or do they only line up with #1? If not whats the best way to get the pump back in time, can I pull the gear again and turn the pump shaft by hand till fuel shoots out #1 line or will it turn too hard to do it by hand? When I did it before it didn't have any fuel in it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not familiar with what your working on but years of diesel mechanicing tells me that if you have timing marks on the pump body and also on the shaft that will line up as its rotated, when they get lined up that will be #1, probably not gonna be able to turn it by hand.

Thanks for the reply, so what your telling me is that the only time those marks line up is on #1? Then I should be good to go, I had it all back together before before I thought about having turned the pump, don't want to tear it all back apart if I don't have to.

Yes, if #1 is nearly or at TDC when your pump marks line up it should be in time.

Thanks again, I went out, filled it with antifreeze held the heater on for a bit, hit the starter and it fired right up, probably won't make the guy I bought it from very happy but it sure made my day. I was afraid I was going to have to tear it all back apart, no big deal but still a pain.

The 2900 engine in the XT is a powerful marvel; in my opinion, one of the best. I built mine and ran it at about 120 HP for years with no trouble. However, I installed an oil pressure gauge, manifold boost gauge, and pyrometer. Some will tell you that they are weak in the driveline. It is my thought, though, that they just need to be driven by a gentleman, not a cowboy. It has always been my position that the clutch not only connects and disconnects power, but, as well, should be used to prevent knashing and grinding of gears. The XT is the sweetest, most comfortable, tractor ever!! Enjoy!

Hey set the front pulley at I Think 26 degrees on those on a 301ci. Line up marks on pump and front pulley and slap the front gear in. Yes the 190's are weak in the rearend. Also hand clutches, and plates.
