O.K. I just bought my first tractor /belly mower. I think it's mid 40ish "C" model. My son and I are haveing a pretty good time working on this old timer but I got some questions. First thing we saw was a positive ground. I thougt to myself "what kinda idiot couldn't put a battery in correct"? Everyone knows negative is ground. Now I see from reading some of this discussion that positive was the norm... oops, yes I turned around, anything hurt? I can't seem to get the amp meter to show charge or discharge, anything to check? Then the gas tank leaks but I think I've got it fixed with a clean-up and "seal all" product. Any other leak repair ideas? Thanks for any advise you can give to this new owner.

Congratulations on a great Mowing Machine. I bought one in 1990 and installed a 5' Woods belly-mount mower and have been using it ever since. I have about 2 acres to mow and it even does great around the trees (many of them). Keep the deck and the tractor greased well and keep the oil changed regularly. Change the anti-freeze every 2 yrs and you will have a mower for not only your life but for many others to follow you. The parts for this machine a still available and they handle excellently. My grandchildren will be using this machine with the proper maintenance.

Again, good luck with a great piece of equipment.

Doug, you will also notice the chargin system is a little on the basic side. You dont have a voltage regulator you have a cut out relay mounted on the generator. The "A" terminal on the generator goes to the cutout, and the other side of the cutout goes to the ampmeter then the battery (negative side). The cutout is a switch that opens when the motor is off so you dont dischagre the battery thru the generator. NOw ot make everthing work the other side of the generator needs to be grounded. This is where the magic comes in. The "F" terminal on the generator is not directly grounded. It runs to the light switch which has a resistor on the side of it. The resistor drops partial voltage to ground and makes the generator charre at 3 amps most of the time. When you pull out the light switch it shorts the "F" terminal wire directly to ground to make it full charge at 10 amps. In other words, one way to check charge on a generator is to ground the "F" terminal and see it the amp meter goes to 10 amps. The cutout relay on the generator should close when the motor starts, annd open when motor is off.

Hi Doug, I assumed that the charging system on the "C" was the same as the WD45. I seems I was wrong. Follow Steve's advice. Good luck. Sorry for the confusion. Dave

Douger, You probably haven't done any damage, however you will have to polarize the generator to get it to charge again. This can be done by by taking a wire and making momentary contact between the battery and the armature. You can do it at the regulator. Just a fraction of a second will be sufficient. Don't hold it on there. Good luck. Just bought a "C" myself. Dave(Ontario)

Douger,

You're correct the the electrical systems in the early AC's (as well as others) are 6V positive ground. It does look kinda goofy with the positive post attached to the steering column...
Should be okay if you switched it back. If your fuel tank starts to leak again (or is still a little) if you have a good radiator man near you, some radiator shops repair leaky fuel tanks. I had the tank on my "B" repaired by my radiator guy and he did a fabulous job. If you only have one small spot that's leaking, there's a product called JB Weld which works great fixing fuel tank leaks, cracked blocks etc. Good Luck with your new toy, the "C's" are great machines...

You probably haven't done any damage. But you will have to polarize the generator to get it to charge again.
