We have a number of Allis Chalmers sitting around- two WD's (one a running/working farm tractor, the other not running), a CA (not running, planning to start restoring next year), and a styled WC (not running). I have noticed that, on all of these, there is a hole in the grill sheet metal on the right hand side at the top. This is also the case with all other styled Allis Chalmers I have ever seen. Does this hole have a purpose?? Why is it there? Thanks for any and all responses! Perplexed and Confused by a little hole, Turner in KS

The shutter was back in those day your manual thermostat. I am at Kansas City, see a lot of them, however was at a tractor show in Arizona back in feburary and did not see any. would you wonder why?

Thanks for all the replies. I'll have to get in there and see if I can see any shutters. Were these used for dusty jobs like corn harvesting? Were they just an option, or should they definitely be in there? I'm just guessing, but were these small cranks generally lost? Thanks again! Turner in KS

I don't think WD 45's had them, correct me if I am wrong.

You're right- only earlier models had them, they were for the shutter control- little crank stuck out through that hole.
