Anyone have any suggestions for obtaining new upper and lower oil seals for the shaft inside the pedestal? The lower one is a National Seal #40155. Have not removed the the upper seal yet, but would appreciate any suggestions on the easiest way to remove it. Also, what is the best source for Timken #14138A roller bearing? Thanks for any suggestions or information.

Tom,

I replaced all the bearings and seals on my '47 C tricycle front earlier this year during a full restoration job. My local bearing distributer was able to get both the seals and bearings/races for me.

I don't know that there is an easy way to remove them (just be patient and take your time). But as for reinstalling the top seal, I made a custom fit bearing "installer" on my wood lathe (I turned a wooden cylinder down to the right diamater so I could slide the seal onto it). The cylinder was long enough to extend out of the pedestal and had a lip just slightly smaller than the outside diameter of the seal. This allowed me to gently tap the seal into place.

If I remember correctly, the bottom seal was a bit more difficult as the bearing and seal had to be installed on the shaft and then the shaft reinstalled. If I remember correctly, I think this was the worst part of the entire job. Be careful as you have to keep a close eye on the seal so it doesn't get damaged during reinstallation of the shaft(an extra set of hands should eliminate the problems that I had!).

If you need any part numbers, I have the seal and bearing numbers. All replacement bearings/races were Timken and all seals were Chicago Rawhide. Just shoot me an email if you need them.

Dana,

I would appreciate the Chicago Rawhide seal part numbers if you can provide them. Thanks.

Was reading some seal topics in the AC Forum and noticed that you may have a listing of cross-referenced oil seal for Allis b and c's.
I 1945 & 1950 Allis B and 1948 Allis C.
Could you email me any cross-reference that you have...

Thanks for your assistance!

Toby
