Over the past few months I have asked questions about a variety of tractors I was thinking of buying for my 35 acre horse property. I talked with the guys in the Case, Deere, Ford, and other forums, but kept coming back to AC - home of the friendliest, most helpful folks. I know I pestered some of you with questions, but you were always gracious and patient, so thank you all.

I settled on a D-17 Series IV with a loader (appears to be Ford with a 3' bucket), 7' grading blade and 5' bush hog that I paid $4500 for. It isn't perfect. The tin is fair at best. The tractor weeps some hydraulic fluid around the 3pt shafts, so I'm hoping a seal kit is findable and installable by a do-it-yourselfer (me). The engine smokes a little and the tires are decent. Over time, and with some advice, I will put this tractor back in great order and maybe even paint it someday.

Feel free to jump in with tips. I hope to help others the way you have helped me.

The Series 4 is a particularly good choice, as the factory 3 point and updated hydraulics make it a much more useful tractor. You're in it right, too- Best of Luck.

Congratulations on your purchase.
My Uncle bought a series IV D17 brand new.
I think it was the only brand new tractor he'd ever bought. He had several other makes and models. But He liked his D17 and really used her
for many things.
I remember He had a set of loose hay forks for the loader.

If it is orange it just runs better. If you paint your other stuff orange you will find it works better too. Just kidding, all are good, but I just happen to like AC. You made a good decision I think and good luck with it, it is a fine tractor. Change all of the oils, including the final drives and grease everything to start with. Get yourself a manual too. Even if you don't really need it you will learn a lot from looking at it. And someday it will come in handy.

sounds like you got all the equipment you need. I have said it before, a D17 is one of the finest tractors ever built, including all colors.
