I want to buy a good pulling tractor for my son. I do not have any brand preference. I am looking for something at a reasonable price with good parts support. Something he can work on if needed. What do you recommend?

I've got a C all set up for pulling... 30+ HP, weight brackets, wheelie bars for $2,900. Can email photo and more info if interested. It's VERY competitve in the 2750 lb class.

If you do not have a brand preference then consider a Model B, but in a John Deere. You will find that parts through the dealer are easier to get as well as used parts compared to finding new parts for a older AC tractor. I feel the JD B is also a safer tractor than the AC. I pull a AC WD45 and also the older JD's. If you are starting out go with the JD's. They will also be more competitive because of the low end torque. More JD B's were made than any other tractor for a reason.

Start him out with a "B", they are powerful for there size and parts are everywhere.

Nawww... I've never seen a B do well in a pull. It is a nice tractor for light work, but pulling is heavy duty.

I'd recommend a WC, if you wish to stick with the AC color. Easy to work on, and you can do more with it when adding weights and balancing the tractor for a pull.

Doug in OR, Just for your information I used to pull a "B" that had 47 HP and it would kick the CRAP out of most WC's that could get down to 3000#

I would recomend the WD over the WC just because of h.p. when you go higher classes, and I'm not a real fan of the hand brake set up on the WC. A WC may be lighter but thats all they got goin for them, hard to beat a WD in 3500#. Hey as long as its ORANGE!

I think it all depends on were you are from and where you want to pull. I'm from IL and here if you want to pull with a national or state organization in antiques you need something other than orange. You need to find an IH M, a JD A, or something similar. 5500# is the lowest you can go in those organizations. You can find a whole slew of parts for an IH at Denny's carb shop and other places that sell bolt on parts. If you just want to pull for fun there are some "brush" pulls as I like to call them around. Sometimes they are hard to find but they are out there. A WD would be pretty competative at one of these in the 3500-4500# classes. But all in all I would go with an IH M. I would have one if I wasn't partial to the Orange ones.
