'C' Oil Pressure Update....

O.K.

Yesterday, I posted, saying that my 'C' had no apparent oil pressure. I was told that the tractor was of the bypass type, and the gauge only told the pressure which built up in the filter.

Today, I unscrewed the filter, looking for the tube which is supposed to go up inside it. There was no tube, but the filter had a wooden stick going up through the center which looks like a skinny taffy-apple stick. I'm assuming that the stick is there to keep the filter media pushed aside until the tube can be inserted, except that I have no tube!

Am I right? If so, does anyone know where I can get the tube? Will I have to visit the neareds AGCO dealer (60 miles away!)? I have no exploded view of the assembly, either in the I&T manual or the operator's manual. HELP!!

throw the stick away. you need a tube. several on this page have made their own out of a piece os tubing. i cant remember the exact dimensions, but in general you need a tube about 4 inches long. make sure it is short enough that it does not stick up and poke a hole in the top of the filter. the diameter is about a 1/4 inch, but you need to measure the hole in the housing it presses into and make if fit that. only push in about 3/8 of a inch . if you push it in too far it will cut off the oil port. the tube is soldered shut on the end and then drill a hole about 1/16 inch in diameter in the top and another about 1/2 inch down on the side, horizontal. You might also be able to call Norm or Sandy Lake and buy one. Dont know if it is aftermarket part or not. Like i said, most of the machinist guys around make their own.

found this in the archive from last year.----
the tube is 1/4 inch diameter (.250 inch) and 4-1/4 inch long. It presses into the housing 1/2 inch so you have 3-3/4 sticking out into the filter. There is a hole in the tube that is 7/64 diameter (.110 inch) on the top and a cross hole 1/4 inch down from the top, same diameter.
About 15% of the oil goes thru the filter and flows back to the motor crankcase. The rest goes to the bearings and top end valves. Unlike a car that filters all the oil prior to use.
After installing the tube, if you still dont have pressure, squirt oil down the steel tube going to the pump. That should reprime the pump. Sometimes they loose prime if oil is changed or they set for a long time

Several other tractors use that filter too. I know some Oliver tractors do. And I just changed the filter on the 4-cylinder Wisconsin engine used on our emergency communications generator. It uses the same filter, though I don't know if that tube is different at the bottom from one make to another. I know they used that same filter up throught the WD45.. and probably into the D series. You might look in a tractor boneyard and find that tube.
