Have just bought a 40B with a distributor and battery, but no generator. How does the battery get recharged if the coil keeps drawing on it and there's no generator to recharge? I am missing something here, but then I grew up on Ford Ns (no joking please!)

In 1940 (to the best of my knowledge)only magnetos were available. Distributors came later on the B. I think someone changed your tractor from a mag to a dist. With out a gererator the only way the battery gets charged is with a battery charger.

i agree, it had a mag in the beginning. the tractor will probably run all day without a recharge, but put on the battery every evening, (or once a month if you use it seldomly)
