It's been a really long time since I had this problem, but if I remember right, the pre-combustion cup is accessed from the out side of the head, opposite the injector. The injector shoots strailght into the pre-combustion cup on the compression stroke. Half of the cup is machined into the head, the other half is a removable cup that is machined into a partial sphere. if the sealing area is not in too bad a shape, a little K-W block seal put on just the sealing lip will shut off the leak that is causing the popping. If it has eroded more than a few thousands deep, (a judgement call) I would replace it. they can still be had at the dealership.

Be very careful with the D19D and it 262 AC/Buda diesel. They are very prone for head problems and if lugged too much they have been known to pull the sleeve down with the piston. And always cool them down for 5 minutes from working to shut off, idle about 1000 rpm. The popping could be a combination of energy cell and nozzles. The energy cell is the main area for the combustion in the 262 engine, special head shape and piston top. Be gentle and the D19D will last for a long time, abuse it and troubles will be soon. Lugging is the #1 killer of the D19D. Popping also might be a valve starting to go out.

Just hanging around for the answer, I have an AC200 diesel but have never heard of energy cells. The outboard on my boat has them. I would first suspect a dirty fuel filter or water separator
