Starting my rebuild

I'm getting ready to start rebuilding my WD-45. Can I take the frame channels off without supporting the rest of the tractor? Or will there be too much stress on the engine and transmission castings?

Also, the pivot pin for the hand clutch is worn and I'd like to replace it. How is it fastened to the transmission housing? Is it just a press fit and takes brute force to get it out, or is it fastened from the inside?

Thanks for any help you can give.

I just repaired a hand clutch which was in similar condition on a WD. I removed the press fit pin with a pipe wrench by just turning it out and then built up the worn areas with an arc welder, cleaning off the flux and filing it back to shape. This took several passes on each end but worked out well. To replace the pin I put it in the freezer and in the meantime drilled a 1/2" hole in the channel directly opposite where the pin sits. Once the pin was in posistion I used a length of 1/2" round and a hammer to replace the pin. It all worked out well.

Thanks for the info. When the pin comes out, does the hole go all the way through the transmission case and leave an open hole? Or is it a blind cavity that holds the pin?

I got the pin to turn in the hole a little bit before my pipe wrench broke. I'll try again later.

Thanks.

Phill

The hole goes right through to the transmission. Peter

The pivot pin for the clutch lever is just pressed in. Consider drilling and tapping it for a bolt or stud to use as a puller. Use a short section of pipe or a socket for a puller. I install them with a "C" clamp to press them in. Made one to fit the worn hole in the lever. Some levers have bushings or could be bored for bushings. Add a grease fitting to the lever or end of the pin.
