I have a Series IV D-19 Diesel and have a problem with it blowing the head gasket. It has done it three times now. The time before this, the head was machined and reworked at a dealer and a new gasket installed. It only went about 15-20 hours before it blew the back out so water and pressure is coming out from the #6 piston area. Has anyone had this type of problem before? The gasket used was a fabric gasket, not a steel one as other tractors use. Can you get more substantial gaskets for these?

An other thing that might help is to put in new set of head bolts

Two things come to mind. Sleeve protrusion and the conditon of the block. I would assume that the head was decked, doesn't hurt to check it though as I have had them goofed up at the machine shop. I don't have a D-19 manual so you will have to acquire one if somebody doesn't come on here with the specs, but the sleeves must protrude from the deck of the block within a range given in the manual. Also check the deck of the block around the head bolts or studs. Often the deck will be pulled up around the studs preventing the gasket from being clamped tight. If the rest of the deck is level, which you check with a straight edge, you can file the humps down by hand. Its pretty hard to goof up if you remove the handle from a GOOD 8-10 inch mill file and lay it flat on the deck and push it across with medium pressure. The high spots will shine up and when it is close to level the file will quit cutting. Just stay away from the top of the sleeves. I can't imagine using a gasket with no fire rings on a wet sleeve engine, get your next one from AGCO, I'll bet it has fire rings.

Go to agco to get your head gaskets, they come with the fire rings. The sleeves are supposed to be .002 above to .002 below deck surface. Really never had a problem with the oem gasket but have had some failures with after market types. Make sure the head is flat. Butch gave you some good info on the flatfiling. Hope this helps Bob
