I need to replace the PTO seal on my 52 CA. However, there is some kind of clutch gizmo on there I cannot get off. I found a set screw on one side and the grease zert on the other and removed both of them. I still cannot get it off.
Any ideas, anyone?

Thanks in advance
Mike

Hi Mike,

It sounds like you have an overrunning coupler on your PTO shaft. Check to see if there is a spring pin that you can drive through from either side under the zerk fitting or the set screw. Mine has 2 zerk fittings that are 180 deg apart. I installed it years ago and cannot remember if there is a spring pin in there...I think there is.

I stuck a pin punch clear through the thing. I think it a slip clutch. It looks like a PTO exptension. If it is turned clockwise, it does not spin the PTO, or vixe versa.

Rod,You the man!!!!!
I went back to check and the end of the pin was about a 1/4" back into the hole where it was not visible until I really looked. I drove it out and
the gizmo just slid off.
What is its purpose? Is it just and extension?
The only implement I have now is a pull type brush hog.
Thanks again.

Mike, it's NOT just an extension. It is called an overrunning coupler and it is a piece of safety equipment. Whenever a high-inertia piece of equipment is being driven by the PTO and the engine is rapidly throttled down, abnormally high stresses can be applied to the drive train because the high-inertia implement has a tendency to overdrive or backdrive the engine. In addition, depending on how the PTO is geared, the high-inertia implement can also tend to continue to drive the tractor forward AFTER the transmission clutch is depressed...not a good thing! An overrunning coupler acts as a one-way clutch to prevent either of these situations.

A brush hog is considered a high-inertia implement and you should always use that overrunning coupler, IMHO.

Glad you got it off...just make sure you put it back on before you use your brush hog.

Thanks for all of the info. I have never had a tractor in my 56 years and am just learning about them. Really appreciate you and the help from this board. I priced the seal downtown and they told me it was $58. I said I think I saw it in a catalog for $5-7, so I am looking. $58????? ?

Thanks again
Mike

Mike, $58 is outrageous! There must have been some misunderstanding. It certainly should be less than $10.
