I have a "B",s/n7040.It has cast center with 4 lugs holding the rim to the center. The problem is I hear a clunk as I'm driving the tractor.I can see the rims don't seem to fit the cast lugs that bolt to the center casting right.I tightened them up as much as I could with a 3/4" drive socket and breaker bar and they still clunk.I had considered welding in some 1/8" flat bar where the lugs are to give them more bite, but before I do that,I would like to know if any of you folks out there has run into a similar situation and how you delt with it.The rims are in good overall condition. They aren't rusted out and have a good coat of paint.Had they been rusted,I would've replaced them but they are in too good of shape to do that. Thanks in advance for your replies.

Hi Don,

Two of the four rim-attaching bolts/clamps(lugs) on each wheel are actually eccentics that are used to tighten the rim to the wheel before the nuts are finally tightened. Check that out first if you did not already know it.

If that doesn't work, be aware that there apparently were at least three different rims used, each with their own unique version of attaching clamps(lugs)...even for the same tire size. That's what my manual for the B, ser 101 & up, indicates. It is possible that the rims were changed out at some point without the correct clamps being used.

Good luck.

Rod

chekc that the two "cam" eccentrics are next to each other. like 12 and 3 on a clock. put the normal locks at 6 and 9. might want to jack the tir up an inch off the ground. loosen the cam locks. loosen the regualar lock. snug up the regular lock just a little. turn the cam locks so it lifts and pulls the rim tight on the wheel. then tighten the bolts. then tighten the normal lugs. if the "lugs" are worn, you might not have enough "lug" to snug them up. may have to do a little padwelding on them. Also make sure the wheel is tight on the axle shaft while the tire is off the ground. Put in neutral and roll the tire. make sure the noise is gone, and not inside. NOw do the other side.

Thanks guys!My AC shop manual and my IT manual didn't mention the ecentric locks on the wheels.I'm glad I decided to make this post.I will be trying to tighten the wheels up today. The only thing I'm concerned about is the possibility that the eccentrics were removed. If thats the case,I will make new ones on my lathe.

Don,
The eccentric bolts have a cross stamped or cast into their heads. One side of the cross is longer than the others. This is the high side of the eccentric. Like the others have said, make sure that they are installed next to each other.

Good luck,
Phil

I was able to check out the wheels on my B today. All 4 lugs have eccentric bolts on both wheels. One side tightened up but is off center and if I try to center the rim,it would run loose. The other side won't tighten at all and still clunks. There is a wear pattern on the lugs and some wear in the bore for the eccentric.I haven't decided how I'm going to attack the problem yet.I will probably weld plates to the wheels so the lugs have something to bite.I may also bore and bush the lugs to tighten them up.

The tractor needs work and I knew that when I bought it but it was too good of a deal to pass up.I picked up the tractor,a buzz saw powered by a John Deere LAU power unit, and a saw mill. All 3 for $1500.The tractor has a freshly rebuilt engine and all new rubber. The buzz saw is getting plenty of use-I cut a lot of firewood.I didn't set up the mill yet.Too many other jobs at the moment.

Thanks so much for all the help.I learn so much every day from reading these forums! There's a great bunch of guys here. Thanks again and take care!
